Our massage therapist, Nicki, uses a science-based approach to provide customized massages. She specializes in Neuromuscular Therapy, which studies how the brain and muscles communicate with each other and create referral pain patterns in the body. These patterns can be created by habitual daily movements, or from traumatic experiences that create patterns of muscle contraction as a protective barrier.
“Massage therapy provides excellent assistance in the maintenance of high-level wellness, because it directly or indirectly affects many of the systems that transport and transform energy within the body. The circulatory, respiratory, muscular, endocrine, and nervous system functions can all be improved through the application of manual massage techniques” (Scheumann, 2007).
Nicki shared with us, “I want to help people use their body’s natural healing methods”. Bodywork and massage can be an immersive experience in re-establishing your connection to your body. Embodiment practices can be so beneficial for those of us that have experienced trauma and chronic stressors. Nicki explained, “when they’re more aware of their bodies, they’re less in their heads”.
So, What should I expect?
When starting your work with Nicki, she’ll explore what your goals and concerns are. Nicki will work with you to create a customized massage that meets your needs. She uses passive and active assisted stretching, Swedish/circulatory massage, myofascial release, neuromuscular therapy, and somatic work. She will explore your concerns and needs, as well as identify trigger points which are involved in us experiencing muscle pain and stiffness.
What are the benefits?
Nicki works with clients to target acute or chronic pain, injuries, physical and muscular tension, to increase mind-body awareness and to help your body systems maintain a state of balance.
Some of the benefits of massage and bodywork include:
