When the mind suffers, the body feels it, and when the body suffers, the mind thinks it. To fully heal the whole self, we must include the physical body. Bessel Van der Kolk, author of The Body Keeps the Score, “ explains, “neuroscience research shows that the only way we can change the way we feel is by becoming aware of our inner experience and learning to befriend what is going on inside ourselves.” Integrating yoga therapy into clinical treatment can help enhance the connection back to self.

The philosophy

At times, talk therapy isn’t enough, as the body holds onto experiences, memories, and emotions. Integrative Yoga Therapy can help us reset our emotional wiring while allowing us to move toward emotional balance. The use of yoga postures, while regulating our breath and nervous system, allows us to become more present with our underlying struggles. We learn how to go inward while becoming less reactionary.

how does it work?

The integration of yoga into your session is thoughtfully and intentionally woven into your treatment plan. Your therapist, who is a certified yoga teacher, will create a gentle sequence rooted in the Hatha yoga style. Intentions for this practice is to create a sense of peace and calm within your mind and body, empower the self with choice, learn how to connect back to the self, trust others, and deepen your relationships.

Typical session

We will briefly discuss recent experiences, thoughts, and feelings. With this specific focus in mind, we will move into asana (moving the body into postures), while integrating pranayama (breathing) practices. Sessions range from 60 to 90 minutes in length. It is important to note, this is a process. The benefits of yoga integration will be seen and felt over time or you may notice immediate relief.
